From the Weeks public access to Jones Island is about 8 nautical miles. This is my “home port” and I launch from this great location often. it has a nice grassy area for prep. There is a short, somewhat tricky, walk to the water. But not too bad. The parking area is day use only, but there are ample place to park in Lopez Village.
Depending on current and weather there are options to hug the Shaw Island or ride the current up San Juan Channel. Washington State Ferries has been running more of the Inter-Island runs through Upright Channel instead of the traditional route through Wasp Passage. So the initial crossing from Lopez Island to Shaw has a higher likelihood of encountering ferries than future up in San Juan channel or Wasp Passage. Note: This trend is a bit unpredictable so be aware.
Lots of great beach to land on Jones Island and none seem to present much of a problem.
Site 16 is perhaps the finest campsite that I’ve ever used and is perfect for my hammock and tarp needs. Site 20, and 21, are also highly recommended, and I agree, although I wasn’t quite sure about a proper hammock setup.
Both of these sites are hammock friendly and nice. In addition, they are very private and reserved for human powered travelers.
The north end of Jones didn’t really appeal to me during my first, fall, visit. I imagine it would be nicer during the summer, although maybe with more boater traffic.
