Launching is from a public access point at the end of North Beach Rd on Orcas Island. There is a small parking lot which, currently, allows overnight parking. A short carry to a gravel, rocky beach which can have a moderate shore break during adverse conditions.
Although short, at about 2 miles, this is an exposed crossing that can get tricky depending on conditions. The main hazard is Parker Reef and a submerged shoal to the west. Dangerous rips can occur during strong, ebb, currents with contrary winds.
There are a number of potential landing sites on Sucia Island and none seem to present much of an issue.
This is my favorite location on Sucia Island. But very, very exposed to all wind. Sites 22 & 24 are a bit more sheltered and have great beach access to Fox Cove. But site 23 & 24 are perched on the south facing ridge with amazing, exposed, view to the south.
These are hammock friendly sites on Shallow Bay that are very protected from strong southeast & south winds. But they are cold and dank. It is easy, however, to move camp from Shallow Bay to Echo Bay.
A nice landing beach, but at high water at extreme tides.
This is a magnificent site with great beach access and a stunning view to the East. The hammock situation isn’t the best due to excessive tree spacing. Would be great for a tent or a one tree hammock setup.
This is a stunning site that looks to have great options for hammocks. Being just above the docks means it would be busy during the summer season. But for off season it might be interesting.
The downside is I’m not quite sure if there is a convenient landing site near this campsite.
